I saw this activity in a back issue of High 5 Magazine. Lu and Em love High 5. They love the stories, poems, hidden pictures and activities in High 5. Plus, getting something in the mail once a month is pretty exciting.
Why weaving? Weaving is great for improving:
Eye / Hand
Fine Motor Skills
Under / Over
Patterns
Supplies: box lid, rubber bands, ribbons cut into workable sections
The great aspect to this activity is that your child can practice and then pullout the ribbons and start over again. The wider the elastics are apart the easier it is for smaller kids. Place the bands closer together if it is too easy for your child. We used a tie box. When we are done, the ribbons and rubber bands can be stored inside to be used again.

What a great idea! I'll be making one for Kutey this week. Thanks for posting it.
What a awesome concept! thanks for sharing my girls will love this little activity :)
Brilliant! Will try this out with L for sure. Thanks for the post.
What a great idea, I think Emma would love this!
I love that she is in a ballerina outfit. That's us many days too!
Oh my, I love this idea!
The result is just beautiful! I can imagine doing this in a classroom, as the materials are simple and inexpensive enough to make many of them. Thanks for the great idea!
That would be quick to assemble with the elastic bands. I've seen it done with notches in the box then wool wrapped around and around passing through the notches. Then once the weaving is done you can snip all of the wool underneath the box and tie neighbouring strings together. Then the weaved 'rug' can be used for a doll's quilt or as a rug for a doll's house....I've been meaning to have a go at weaving with my little one but haven't found the time yet.
During my teaching days, when we did our eight week long Africa unit, the children used this technique to make "kente cloth" during Ghana/ Asante Week. They LOVED it.
How strange! This past week, I got the urge to learn to weave, and to teach Chandra (5) how to do it. I have too many favorite kids' books to say this is my favorite, but I LOVE Charlie Needs a Cloak, by Tomie DePaola, and after we read it one day this week, I was trying to explain to Chandra how the threads end up making the fabric (that's a big mental jump), and decided we should DO IT.

Thank you again for all your wonderful ideas!
