Girls Scout Pledge Coloring Page

I just signed on as Co-leader of Lu's new Daisy Troop.  I am fortunate to have a Co-leader who is super organized and detail oriented. That leaves all the fun and craft planning to me! Our first meeting is this week. To reinforce learning the Girl Scout Pledge I created a coloring sheet for the girls.  It is a great activity for the girls who finish the main activity quickly and for the girls who don't get to it can take it home to color. I know my blogging buddy Katie from Katie's Nesting Spot will appreciate this since she just signed on as a Co-leader for her daughter's Daisy Troop. So here you go all you Daisy Leaders out there! I always have crayons, markers, paper and stickers in my bag. I am the marker lady at Lu's gymnastics class. While I sit with Em in the waiting area, kids gather at my feet and draw. They have gotten so comfortable with the fact that I come packing (with markers) that my lack of markers today annoyed one little girl. I had the nerve not to bring the markers she liked to use! And yes, her Mama was talking on her phone on the opposite side of the room oblivious. Well, I digress. The point is, during the holidays I like to have lots of holiday themed activity sheets and coloring pages ready for those fits of boredom. Happy New Year Valentine: Coloring Page & Printable Card

The start of the Asian New Year and Valentine's Day fall on the same day this year. 

2010 is the Year of the Tiger. 

I combined the two to make a unique Valentine's Day Coloring Sheet & Card for your little tigers. Click download on the top of each menu bar. If you don't download it first it comes out sized strangely.

Also the web address prints normal - it just looks wonky in Scribed. Remember download first then print. After printing, just fold in half and then color or vise versa.

Sending Snail Mail

Crafty Care Packages: Today we decided to send some of our little friends some good old fashioned snail mail. No one loves getting mail more than a small child. Both girls go crazy when they get a card and a few stickers from their Grand Parents. So I thought what a great little surprise to receive in the mail an envelope full of crafty activities. I printed out some free activities from the web and attached a little note listing the resources so their Mamas could know where to find more paper "gems." Lulu was so excited by the printables she could only help me put them in envelopes and seal them before she had to start gluing "gems" onto her own crown. Meanwhile Emme created beautiful stickers to decorate the envelopes with. So...McKayla, Avari, Sophia, Hanah, Ava and Oliver watch your mailboxes!

Make your own stickers: Blank printer labels, markers, stamps, crayons... Go to town! At one point Emme was drawing and stamping at the same time! Then I folded down the edge of the label sheet so the sticker ends were exposed and easily removed from the sheet. This is an activity that would appeal to all ages. Older kids could design their own return address labels or letter seals.
Removing stickers from a sheet and placing it onto paper is excellent for small children's developing fine motor skills...plus they love it!

Robbie Burns Night

Let me preface this by saying we are on day 7 of the girls being sick. The morning is a blur of whining, runny noses and Mama mumbling to herself like a crazy woman. So I decided to fill the afternoon with an activity that would make the time fly. My husband is Scottish/Irish and is very proud of his heritage so I thought why not surprise him with a Robbie Burns night (3 days late...oops!)

There were all sorts of ideas and printables for the occasion. It is a great resource for coloring pages and craft ideas. Their specialty seems to be holidays. Making the Scottish Flag banner was fun and Lulu got to glue (her favorite activity.) We printed out some Robbie Burns poems and a blessing. We made tartan sashes out of paper and crayons. We borrowed some excellent traditional Scottish music from our friend. Lulu also colored the map and flag of Scotland. Needless to say the afternoon flew by!

Sol-Nal / Happy Lunar New Year

Happy New Year! Here is my offering to you...a free kids coloring page in honor of the Lunar New Year. Download the picture and print!

There is very little offered on the web currently in terms of children's activities and crafts for the Korean New Year. There is a tremendous amount of fun ideas and activities for kids to celebrate the Chinese New Year. I am a Korean adoptee and have very little knowledge of many Korean traditions and customs. I grew up thinking anything Chinese was interchangeable with Korean. I don't want my daughters to make the same mistake! My youngest daughter is also a Korean adoptee and my eldest daughter (biological) is part Korean and Scottish. As they grow up, I plan on exposing them to the beautiful and unique Korean culture and traditions. I am happy that we will be learning much of it together. You can imagine how frustrated and disappointed I was when I could only find some really bad clip art and a few paragraphs about the Korean New Year. I suspect there are a lot of adoptive parents like myself in a similar situation. I decided that It is my mission to use this blog as a resource for adoptive parents as well as crafty folks. I will try to pull together the best of the web and some of my own ideas, crafts and artwork especially for kids. So check back occasionally for recommendations and ideas!

Lulu will be wearing her Han-bok to school to celebrate the New Year. She is bringing sweet rice cakes for snack. (These are yummy and fun to eat as they are about the size of your head!) I bought a children's book about the Korean New Year for her to share with the class (New Clothes for New Year's Day by Hyun-joo Bae). She will also be bringing in copies of this drawing (which I did very quickly because I couldn't find anything halfway decent on line!) for the children to color.
